For the May Sunday Assembly, we’ve chosen the timely topic of “Scientific Literacy,” and why it’s important.

Brad Kelley will be our MC leading us through the Assembly, and we’re excited to host Art Stewart of Oak Ridge Associated Universities as our presenter. Art specializes in Aquatic Ecology, Ecotoxicology, and Effective Science Writing, and advocates including poetry as reading fodder for scientists to encourage better science writing in students from Kindergarten to grad school. He will give a talk on the importance of scientific literacy, ways to help promote it in the classroom, and give a reading of some of his science-themed poetry as well!

For the children’s program, we have a series of cool chemistry experiments led by Aleta Ledendecker, which will be of interest to both younger and older kids. As a reminder, all parents must sign a one-time waiver that lists allergy information and acknowledges rules, as well as a sign-in sheet each time.

After the assembly, we’ll be headed over to Trio’s on Market Square for brunch, which is both delicious and family and budget friendly.

Please arrive at 10:30 to mingle and get situated before the assembly, which begins at 10:45. Get to know other secular people from our area and enjoy the one life we know we have, because life is better when you have a community to share it with. Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More!
