With everyone’s favorite foodie holiday coming up this month, let’s celebrate one of life’s greatest pleasures together—“Food!”
Bring your Thanksgiving leftovers for a tremendous “friendsgiving” potluck after the assembly! This is a great way to get rid of excess leftovers while trying out dishes from the other assemblers and their families. We especially need warming trays and crock pots to help keep everything hot and ready for serving, so please bring any if you have them.
Our guest speaker will be Jenna Bailey from Beardsley Farm, who will tell us about their fantastic organization, the local foods and organic farming movement in Knoxville, and how we can get involved as volunteers.
The children’s program, led by Aleta and Heike, will also be food-themed, with blind taste testing games and a reading of “Green Eggs and Ham” to help inspire kids to expand their palate and not judge foods by their colors. And remember, all parents must sign a one-time waiver that acknowledges rules and responsibilities, as well as a sign-in sheet each time.
Eating is one thing that all people have in common, but what we eat distinguishes us in so many ways. Traditional dishes tie us to our ancestors and culture. Religions each have their own dietary restrictions believers must adhere to. Modern science also has a lot to say about what we should and shouldn’t eat in order to be healthy and environmentally sustainable. The media is always ready to promote the latest study or diet fad, but rarely tries to give us the big picture. Let’s try to cut through all the hype and propaganda to find out how we can make the best food choices to live in harmony with our bodies and the Earth.
